Judith Wyder and Eduard Hernández crowned winners of the CDA of Mallorca by UTMB®
The Catalan runner covered the 26 kilometers from Valdemossa to Port de Sóller in 02:01:46, while the Swiss athlete, seventh overall, finished in a time of 02:13:32. At 9:00 AM, the last of the main distances of Mallorca by UTMB®, the CDA, Camins de s’Arxiduc, in the 20K category, started from the beautiful village of Valdemossa. 26 kilometers with 1,000 meters of positive elevation gain and 1,300 meters of negative. 970 runners set off to reach the village of Deià and, following the horizon with the Mediterranean Sea, traveled along paths and trails until reaching the sea at Port de Sóller.
Around 11:00 AM, after 02:13:32, Eduard Hernández crossed the finish line at the Moll Comercial de Port de Sóller. The Catalan runner, who had been in second position for almost the entire course, took advantage of the last kilometers to overtake the Frenchman Valentin Benard. “I was able to follow the strategy I had planned, and in the end, that’s when I made a sprint,” said the Catalan.
Following him, Valentin Benard finished in 02:04:51, having won the Escales del Calvari event on Wednesday. The Austrian Dominik Matt completed the podium with a time of 02:05:77.
In the women’s category, the Swiss Judith Wyder, the eleventh highest-ranked woman in the world by UTMB® Index, had no rivals and placed seventh overall, first in the women’s category, with a time of 02:13:32. “I’m delighted to be here. I had a great time. Yesterday I was able to train on part of the ETM course, and I loved it. I recommend everyone come next year to participate in this event and enjoy this beautiful island,” said the runner, whose secret to success lies in “enjoying what I do and being very grateful to all the people who make it possible for me to be here.”
In a time of 02:25:06, local athlete Bel Calero took second place. “I’m very happy to run here and see such a high level of athletes on the island.” The third-place finisher was Italian Margherita Vitali, who stopped the clock at 02:32:41.
Amelie Lane and Joan Barceló, future trail stars
Around 10:00 AM, the Joves Promeses race took place for young people aged 16 to 18 who wanted to enjoy everything that participating in a Mallorca by UTMB® event represents, with victories for Spanish runner Joan Barceló and British athlete Amelie Lane. The athletes set off from Deià and completed the last stretch of the CDA, from this town to Port de Sóller. In total, 13.9 kilometers with 393 meters of positive elevation gain. At 12:00 PM, the awards ceremony for the CDA and Joves Promeses distances took place at the Moll Comercial de Port de Sóller, while around 2:30 PM the last runners of the CDA crossed the finish line.
Mallorca by UTMB® thus concludes its first edition, marked by the DANA, but above all by the great work that the teams have done day and night so that at least two of its four main distances could be held.
